Florida is a closed primary state

Florida's 2024 presidential preference primary is coming up. Here are some key dates to keep in mind.

To participate in the primary election on March 19, Floridians have two more weeks to register to vote or change their party affiliation. The deadline is February 20.

Florida is a closed primary state. So, for example, only registered Republicans can choose who the Republican presidential candidate will be in November.

By the way, voters can change their party affiliation as much as they want, up until 29 days before any primary or election.

Party registration is of less concern in Georgia. It’s an open primary state, where voters can choose either party’s ballot. Georgia's presidential preference primary is March 12, and the registration deadline in February 12.
