The Florida Department of Agriculture expects one impact of COVID-19 will be more families needing help providing meals for their kids over summer break this year. The department is hoping to get prepared ahead of time by looking for potential partners now.
In a statement, Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried said more families this year are faced with food insecurity. And when schools release for summer break, many students who rely on school meals will need to find another way to get food. Her department is looking for more groups willing to partner with the state for the Summer BreakSpot Program. Specifically, they’re seeking out non-profits, residential summer programs, and faith-based organizations. The program provides free meals over the summer to kids who need them. This past summer, sponsors served nearly 74,000 meals.
