Step Up For Students has awarded its millionth education choice scholarship. The organization was founded in 2002 and serves around 140,000 students a year.

The organization's Ron Matus says the nonprofit has given out around 10,000 more tax credit scholarships this year than normal. And he believes that’s related to COVID-19. Matus says some private schools were offering in-person classes while public schools were operating remotely.

"I think it’s clear because of COVID that more parents than ever value options and so there might have been more interest in these scholarships because parents wanted the options that private schools give them," said Matus.

More than 90% of families that receive the scholarship are low-income, and most of them are non-white. The scholarship allows families to send their kids to private schools.
