Registration Begins For Gathering Citizen Initiative Signatures

The Florida Department of State launched a new website Monday where people must register before they can start collecting signatures to get proposed constitutional amendments on the ballot.

As of Tuesday afternoon more than 40 people had registered as paid petition circulators. The Department of State says once a person is registered, a petition form specific to them will be created and they can start using it right away. The department is preparing to begin a rule making process to incorporate changes from a new law enacted last weekend. It includes provisions that require people gathering signatures to turn forms in within a certain time period and imposes fines for failure to do so. A spokesperson with the department of state says petition circulators can continue gathering signatures while that process moves forward.
