Governor Ron DeSantis has set his sights on eliminating Common Core standards from Florida public education.
At a stop in Cape Coral Thursday, DeSantis announced an executive order calling for the elimination of Common Core and its “vestiges” in the public school system. Common Core is a set of educational standards for mathematics and English-language arts, which Florida adopted in 2010. The state revised those standards in 2014 and renamed them the Florida Standards.
Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran also spoke at the Cape Coral school. He said Floridians have been “stuck” with Common Core standards for too long.
Revisions to state educational standards would be made by the state Department of Education under Corcoran’s leadership. DeSantis says he is requesting an increased push for civics education be among the potential changes.
Common Core is still used by the majority of states.
