Upcoming Wildfire Awareness Week Remembers Worst Florida Fire
Next week marks the beginning of Florida’s Wildfire Awareness Week. And this year lands on the anniversary of a historic season.
This year’s Wildfire Awareness Week will take place between April 8th through the 14th and marks the 20th anniversary of Florida’s worst wildfire season.
In 1998, approximately 500,000 acres of forests and private lands were scorched, destroying more than 300 homes and structures.
This wildfire season has already seen more than 11-hundred and 40 fires burn nearly 69,000 acres. 25 of those are still active. Greenway, Collier County has burned nearly 18-thousand acres and is 95 percent contained. Firebreak, Gulf County has burned more than 8-thousand acres and is 90 percent contained. And Old Blade Line, Polk County has burned 450 acres and is 60 percent contained.
