Thursday Marked The First Black Girls Day At The Capitol

Davondra Alston

Thursday was the first Black Girls Day at the Florida Capitol. The event highlights policies that affect African American women in Florida.

Advocacy groups are calling for more funding for education and increased pathways for voting.

Power U member Shi’Niah Carr says, “Yes, I am a black girl, just like any other race, my sisters and I matter. Trump you degrade us to the point of no return. We should’ve had much more voting options, we’re the biggest voting bloc. Legislatures we thank you for the few that support us. And to the rest that do not support us, should find a way to help us in every way possible.”

The event marked the first of its kind and included progressive organizations like the Florida Immigrant Coalition, the Soul Sisters Leadership Collective and the New Florida Majority.
