Florida’s governor is lending some support to a bill that would make texting while driving a primary offense.
Delray Beach Democratic Representative Emily Slosberg wants law enforcement to be able to hand out tickets just for texting behind the wheel. That’s currently a secondary offense, meaning a driver has to be pulled over for a separate issue first. Now Governor Rick Scott is weighing in.
“I haven’t seen the bill, but I clearly think we ought to look at doing something like that. You… you see too many accidents where people are distracted. So no one should be texting and driving,” Scott said.
Similar bills in past years haven’t gotten a single committee hearing. But this year, Slosberg’s measure has dozens of bipartisan co-sponsors, and appears to have a better shot at making it through the process.
