Group Vows More State Funding Equity for North Florida

Tom Flanigan

Too often, North Florida is shortchanged by the Legislature when it comes to crucial funding. At least, that’s the message from a group of regional leaders that is vowing to make the case to lawmakers as well as the homefolks.

The group, called “Stand Up For North Florida”, began last year. Former Okaloosa County Commissioner Wayne Harris said the original idea was to obtain more conservation funding from state lawmakers.

“At times we don’t get as much attention as more populated neighbors to the south. But our role in Florida’s economy and tourism industry are vital. Our assets must be protected," he said.

And former North Florida Republican Congressman Steve Southerland added the group has now expanded its mission to seek more equity in all areas of state budgeting.

“To represent our region’s interests with a united front in 2018 and beyond.”

Southerland said Stand Up For North Florida has filed to become a 501-C-4 organization to give it a stronger presence and influence during the upcoming legislative session.
