U.S. Senator Bill Nelson is pushing the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, to extend a housing assistance program.

Transitional shelter assistance covers lodging at hotels and motels for survivors whose homes are uninhabitable or inaccessible after a natural disaster.  The program offers support for up to two weeks, but Senator Nelson wants more time.

Logistical hurdles and lack of electricity in some areas have slowed recovery, and officials with the state and FEMA are still hammering out long-term housing plans.  Transitional assistance recipients could lose support as early as this weekend, Nelson worries, for some, that’s too soon.
