Ziffer's League Presidency All About Home Rule

Tallahassee Commissioner and incoming Florida League of Cities President Gil Ziffer is vowing to step up his fight against what calls a legislative power grab.

In the past few years, lawmakers have chipped away at local authority to regulate everything from hydraulic fracturing to ride hailing services like Uber and Lyft.

Some observers paint it as a partisan struggle, but Ziffer says it has more to do with lifestyle.

“The state has its place, but when it comes to things like zoning, or when it comes to things that effect people on a local level like art, culture, economic development, we can do that best. And that’s what home rule’s all about.”

Ziffer has taken his “let cities work” campaign across the state, earning him the title, “home rule hero.”

Living in Tallahassee will make it easier to ride herd on the issue, Ziffer says.
