Ziffer Warns Homestead Tax Break Could Hurt Local Governments

Tallahassee City Commissioner Gil Ziffer says although a proposed increase in the homestead tax break would keep money in the pockets of homeowners, the move could hurt local governments.

"It’s a big problem for cities and for counties because it affects the ad valorem taxes that would come into city coffers and county coffers, to pay for basic services: police, fire, road maintenance, things like that," Ziffer said.

The exemption would tax a six figure home as if it were worth a quarter of the price, for example a $100,000 home would be taxed as if it were worth $25,000. But the measure appears to be moving slowly in the legislature and if passed would also require approval from 60% of the voters.
