Gillum Challenging Local Preemption, Again

Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, a rising star in the Florida Democratic Party, is once again taking Republican lawmakers to task.

Gillum made headlines recently when he challenged an NRA inspired preemption on local gun regulations. This time, Gillum is calling out a sweeping Republican proposal to preempt local business regulations.

Gillum was joined by environmental and social service advocates at a City Hall press conference, across the street from the state Capitol building.

“We’re now faced with yet another, we believe in our opinion, draconian effort to take power and decision making out of the hands of local elected officials.”

Sierra Club lobbyist David Cullen warned the move would prevent local  governments from regulating fertilizers, and leave them on the hook for waterway cleanup.

Cullen said he has no problem defending local control while at the same time pushing a statewide fracking ban.

“Rules promulgated by the state. Statwide bans, or whatever, should set a floor, not a ceiling.”

Fracking endangers every Florida community, Cullen says.
