Florida Advocate Says Water War Truce Unlikely

A leading Florida advocate isn’t optimistic a compromise will flow from the latest court order in a years-long water war with Georgia.

Special Master Ralph Lancaster wants a settlement by January 24th or he’s threatening a decision both sides will regret.

But Apalachicola Riverkeeper Dan Tonsmeire says Georgia shows no willingness to cap upstream use.

“The fact that they have moved through Congress and other venues to stop the science from being done, demonstrates to me that they don’t have a good faith interest in trying to be equitable with the water.”

Lancaster also demanded both sides detail their settlement efforts in a confidential report. He will have to submit his recommendation to the U.S. Supreme Court, which has the final say.
