Miami Republican Senator Rene Garcia wants Congress to reconsider the so-called, “wet foot, dry foot,” policy that gives Cuban nationals a special advantage in immigration policy.
Garcia’s memorial does not have the full force of law. But it urges Congress to reconsider the 1966 Cuban Adjustment Act and the way it makes Cuban refugees automatically eligible to apply for social benefits.
The memorial asks Congress to consider the quote, “renewed diplomatic relations,” between the United States and Cuba. President Barack Obama extended an olive branch to Cuba, but the move was heavily criticized by President-elect Donald Trump.
