Floridians Encouraged To Sign Up For Upcoming Human Trafficking Summit

There are only a few days left for Floridians to register for this year’s Human Trafficking Summit, and Attorney General Pam Bondi says there will be many exciting panels and speakers.

Bondi leads the Statewide Council on Human Trafficking—one of the hosts of this year’s Human Trafficking summit.

She says one human trafficking panel she feels is important centers on Florida’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. Bondi adds the LGBT community became one of her focuses—following the mass shooting in Orlando at Pulse, a gay nightclub.

“I learned something new at the scene of Pulse, when we were on the ground there for so many weeks,” she said. “You know, I typically say it’s girls that are trafficked. But, so many of our gay community when their family finds out that they’re gay, they’re family kicks them out of their houses and they are being trafficked as well.”

Speaking at a recent Florida Chamber of Commerce forum in Orlando, Bondi touted one of the main speakers of the summit, Richard Lapchick.

“Our last speaker is a renowned Doctor—actually from UCF [University of Central Florida]—and he’s talking about the trafficking at athletic events,” she added. “And, I think you’ve heard me say before, ‘where are the number one places to traffick kids?’ In no particular order, the Republican National Convention, the Democratic National Convention, the Super Bowl, and athletic events. And, what do we have coming up right in Tampa? We have the college football playoffs, and right here [Orlando], we have the ACC.”

The Keynote Speaker is actress Anne Archer. Bondi says she’s known for movies like “Fatal Attraction” and “Patriot Games.”

“But, to me, her best work is a 2016 movie she made called ‘Trafficked,’” she continued. “And, she is truly, in California, an advocate for human trafficking. She’s testified in Congress and she’s got a foundation helping because California has a tremendous problem with it, too. So, Anne Archer will be here at Lunch, talking about the work she does, and sharing her ideas with Florida.”

The Human Trafficking Summit will be at the Rosen Centre Hotel in Orlando on Monday, October 10. Registration closes Monday. For more information, visit humantraffickingsummit.com.
