Walk Promotes Healthier Breastfeeding

Florida Department of Health

More than 100 new moms and their babies were part of Saturday's (8/6) Breastfeeding Awareness Walk at Tallahassee's Railroad Square Art Park.

The short morning walk began and ended at the Square's Crum Box Gastgarden. Coordinating the happening was Dykibra Gaskin. She's the public health nutrition program director for the Women, Infants and Children program at the Florida Department of Health in Leon County.

"We had a great turnout!" Gaskin exclaimed after the walk. "We had a lot of people from the community come; we had pregnant moms, we had moms with toddlers, nursings (little babies)...we were just so excited to have everyone here today."

Gaskin said about 3 out of 4 local moms now initiate breastfeeding on their own. But a lingering problem is that too many of these moms stop breastfeeding within the first 6 months. Experts say they should keep nursing for a year, or even longer.
