Loggerheads Showing A Peach State Penchant

The rare loggerhead sea turtle is making an astonishing comeback along Georgia’s 100-mile Atlantic Coast.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources counted 2,890 nests this summer. Better than a new record, state officials say it surpasses their goal of 2,800 nests by 2028.

The good news comes 50 years after the federal government listed loggerheads as threatened. Wildlife officials in Florida and both Carolinas are also reporting encouraging numbers.
