NRA Targeted Lawmaker Denied Appointment

The National Rifle Association can claim House Judiciary Chairman Charles McBurney as another notch in its gun belt.

The powerful lobbying group urged Governor Rick Scott not to appoint the Jacksonville Republican to a vacancy on the Duval County circuit court, and Friday Scott gave the nod to another attorney.

McBurney says he doesn’t regret siding with prosecutors and opposing the NRA’s controversial proposal to expand the state’s stand-your-ground law.

“I think it was the right thing to do. I did not feel that that was a good bill. I felt that it was a pro-criminal type bill, to me, and sort of an anti-victim bill.”

McBurney was quick to praise Scott’s selection, Robert Dees. Term limits are forcing McBurney to step down next year. He says he has no immediate plans to run for another office.
