Prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty for 34-year-old Sigfredo Garcia, who faces first-degree-murder charges in connection with the 2014 death of Florida State University law professor Dan Markel.
Garcia’s attorney, Jim Lewis, argues his client deserves to be free on bond because the state has no evidence to support its murder-for-hire theory.
“That’s the government’s theory, and there’s nothing to back that up but speculation. So let them come forward with some proof to show anything, any connection between that family and my client. Come forward with it.”
Garcia remains held without bond at the Leon County Jail. But the state could be forced to reveal more of its case next week during a so-called “Arthur Hearing.” Lewis says he plans to question investigators at that time.
