Second Bear-Hunt Parameters Emerge

The parameters of a proposed second bear hunt in Florida in as many decades are beginning to emerge.

Staff at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission have come up with four different proposals. One calls for a season that would be divided into three, four-day periods in October.

Staff has also recommended postponing another hunt until 2017 or not holding another hunt for several years.  A highly controversial hunt last October resulted in the deaths of slightly more than 300 bears, but plans for a second hunt aren't that specific.

Meanwhile, animal rights protesters have successfully urged some local governments to pass resolutions opposing another hunt.

Commissioners are expected to discuss the proposals at a monthly meeting in East Point next week.
