The Florida State University Board of Trustees is updating its code of student conduct six months after settling a lawsuit tied to an alleged sexual assault by former star quarterback Jameis Winston.
Jennifer Broomfield was a domestic violence program head for the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs before FSU chose her to be ts first Title 9 director.
Much of her time has been spent rewriting the code on sexual misconduct and overhauling procedures for handling Title 9 complaints. She says she sought reaction from students and faculty.
“We wanted to make sure that what we had been writing and thinking about for months and months and months, that made sense to us, because we had been working on it for so long, made sense to the community.”
The sexual misconduct code defines consent as something that is “active, not passive,” and given at every stage of a sexual encounter. FSU President John Thrasher is pledging to make Title 9 compliance a priority.
“We’re committed to expanding our comprehensive efforts to putting an end to sexual and relationship violence in our community as best we can.”
Broomfield says the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights will review the changes.
