Two Groups Sharing The Amendment 4 Load

Backers of Amendment 4 have a little more than three months to sell voters on their tax-cutting plan to promote solar energy in Florida, so they’re dividing up the work.

Lawmakers placed the measure on the Aug. 30 primary ballot largely to avoid confusion with other solar initiatives appearing in November. Now, Chris Spencer, executive director of Florida for Solar, says two advocacy groups have sprung up to coordinate the campaign.

“We’re utilizing and capitalizing on their grass roots network. They are utilizing and capitalizing on our exposure in the Legislature and kind of our strategy and messaging.”

Spencer’s group expects to launch a media campaign when absentee ballots go out in July, but declined to say how money they hope to raise.

The other group, Floridians for Lower Energy Costs, is allied with environmentalists and will mount a ground campaign, Spencer says. The measure would provide a property tax break for renewable energy improvement and is supported by the rooftop industry.
