A key figure in Governor Rick Scott’s administration says he’s leaving state government to run for Citrus County Sheriff.
Department of Veteran’s Affairs executive director Mike Prendergast announced his decision Tuesday at Cabinet meeting.
The retired Army colonel says his 28-year military career gives him an advantage in the race.
”One out of every five voters in Citrus County has worn the cloth of the United States of America on their backs. There are a lot of counties across our state that have a huge veteran demographic. But this is by far one of the largest.”
Prendergast was Scott’s first chief of staff before taking over the department in 2011.
Prendergast is recommending he be replaced by Al Carter, his top deputy.
Prendergast's last day on the job is April 30.
