Enterprise Deal Presents A Mixed Bag For Black Caucus

Rep. Charles McBurney (R-Jacksonville)

It appears House Republicans cut a deal with the chamber’s black caucus to gain approval for the governor’s economic development package.  But the supposed exchange hasn’t gotten the caucus everything it wants.

Thursday the House Judiciary committee shelved two bills that have been front of mind for the chamber’s black caucus.  Putting stand your ground changes on hold is right in line with the caucus’ priorities.  But postponing a juvenile civil citations measure isn’t.  Rep. Charles McBurney (R-Jacksonville) explains the decision to set aside the bill this way.

“You know sometimes in this process not all the issues come up all at once,” McBurney says.  “So the concerns kind of grew and you had concerns from law enforcement persons that were raised about the bill, and so because of some of those concerns I think members started thinking hmmm…”

McBurney says the moves weren’t part of a deal to gain votes for Enterprise Florida funding.
