Body Cameras Bill Heads To House Floor

A body cameras-related bill is now headed to the House floor, after passing its last committee Thursday.

Rep. Shevrin Jones (D-West Park) is the bill’s sponsor.

“The bill requires law enforcement agencies to provide policies and procedures as well as training to all personnel who use, maintain, store, or release body camera recording data,” said Jones, during the House Judiciary Committee meeting.

The passage of his measure comes a day after the family of Corey Jones advocated on behalf of the bill. Corey Jones—no relation to Representative Jones—was killed months ago by a South Florida plainclothes officer, while his car was stalled on the road. The family says they’d have answers by now had there been camera footage. Meanwhile, the body camera bill’s Senate companion passed its first committee Monday, and has two more stops to go.
