Lawmaker Says Food Stamp Users Should Visit Farmers Markets

Fruits and Veggies at a farmer's market

Rep. Reggie Fullwood (D-Jacksonville) wants to increase Floridians’ access to fresh fruits and vegetables. He’s pushing a bill that would help those receiving food stamps spend that assistance money at farmers markets. Fullwood says his measure would help farmers markets get the technology needed to accept the payment electronically, through EBT cards.

“The bill basically allows a mechanism for farmers markets that aren’t using EBT to get the machines for free. There’s some training the Department of Agriculture provides for free,” Fullwood says.

Fullwood says he’s filed the bill before and while nobody has voted against it, it hasn’t passed. He’s hoping this year it will be a priority in both chambers.
