Solar Ballot Initiative Draws Record Donations In June

Supporters of a solar power ballot initiative launched their campaign in January with hopes of building a $10 million war chest. Organizers are cautiously optimistic after hitting the half million-dollar mark.

The latest campaign finance report shows Floridians For Solar Choice racked up their best month yet in June, with $155,000 in donations. But Southern Alliance for Clean Energy executive director Stephen Smith warns the opposition is significant.

“We’re going against some of the biggest power companies in the world, so it’s truly a David and Goliath effort.”

Campaign organizers have approached Solar City, one of the largest roof-top suppliers in the nation, but the company has yet to weigh in. The vast majority of the funding has come from Southern Alliance for Clean Energy.
