The Wait Is Over: Scott Approves Growlers

Beginning July 1, Floridians can get their 64 ounce growlers filled.

After three years of trying, state lawmakers have succeeded in legalizing sixty-four ounce growlers.

Gov. Rick Scott may have secured his legacy Thursday by signing this year’s growler legislation into law.  The state’s craft brewing industry has been pushing for the 64 ounce refillable bottle for years.  Mike Carbonell of Tallahassee’s Growler Country says preparations are underway.

“We’re going to do some commemorative ones with some specialty growlers that we’re probably going to pre-sell,” Carbonell says, “just got to work out the details on that.  Then the other one’s just going to have more information about us and how to take care of your growlers.”

Importantly, the measure also ensures craft brewers can set up tasting rooms where they brew their beer.  But it’s unclear at this time whether history will remember Growler Independence Day as May 14—the date of signature, or July 1—the date the law takes effect.
