Will Tax Emails Be Private? Only Scott Knows

Lawmakers say homeowners would be less of a target for internet scams if Governor Rick Scott agrees to keep email traffic with local tax collectors private. The legislation was a priority for Republican Senator Jack Latvala of Clearwater.

Latvala says he was shocked how much personal information gets posted on tax collectors’ websites. He worries open government laws make it too easy to get private email addresses and send phony tax bills.

“In many counties, the actual tax bill that the individual gets is printed on the internet.”

Public records exemptions require a two-thirds vote by the Legislature. Governor Rick Scott has until May 22 to sign the bill, veto it, or let it become law without his signature.
