Online Voter Registration's Fate Murky

The Legislature agreed to mandate online voter registration by 2017, but don’t log-on yet. Governor Rick Scott’s top elections chief is strongly opposed.

Secretary of State Ken Detzner pleaded with lawmakers not to add another headache to an ongoing overhaul of his computer systems.

He also warned about a computer meltdown during the next presidential election. But he might as wellhave been waving his boss’s veto pen.

“There’s a flashing yellow light with regard to planning and implementation and that’s why I’m taking this position today.”

Senator Jeff Clemens, a Lake Worth Democrat, said his bill allows Detzner plenty of time to finally give the state’s election supervisors what they’ve wanted for years .
