Bill Setting Guidelines For Body Cameras Passes Florida Senate Panel

Florida Channel

A bill that would ensure all law enforcement agencies using body cameras establish set policies and procedures passed a Senate panel Tuesday.

Sen. Greg Evers (R-Baker) is the committee bill’s main sponsor in his capacity as the chair of the Senate Criminal Justice Committee.

“Whoever is going to use these body cameras, they have to set up the correct procedures and policies. It also says they have to do the training and that they have to set up the retention of the body camera recorded and the periodic review of the body camera practices,” said Evers. “We’re saying, ‘okay, if you want to use them, these are the things that you’ve got to do.’”

The measure differs from a related bill by Sen. Chris Smith (D-Fort Lauderdale) also moving in the Senate that creates a public records exemption for body cameras recordings done by law enforcement.
