Pro-choice advocates rallied at the state Capitol Wednesday in response to three abortion bills currently making their way through the Legislature.
With session officially underway, Planned Parenthood Affiliates from central Florida are in Tallahassee to launch their “My health, My life. No matter what” campaign against outlawing abortion in the state.
Three anti-abortion bills are up for discussion this session. Sarah Wissig, a volunteer in support of Planned Parenthood, says admitting privileges legislation is a major concern for the organization.
“Politicians should not interfere with the doctor patient relationship and should promote quality, evidence based care for women. Senate Bill 920, legislation which would require physicians to obtain medically unnecessary admitting privileges at a local hospital is an effort to make it harder for women to access safe and legal abortion. My health, my life… no matter what,” Wissig said.
Anna Eskamani, a spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood of Orlando says the organization wants to keep lawmakers out of medical decisions between women and their doctors.
“Planned Parenthood is thriving, but we are fighting to ensure that our patients have access to care. Again, for us… for me this isn’t about politics it’s about insuring that my patients have access to care each and every day,” said Eskamani.
For the next 60 days, Planned Parenthood supporters will rally during Women’s Act Wednesdays at the state Capitol, but not every bill stands a chance of passing. Rep. Charles Van Zant’s (R- Jacksonville) Floridia for Life act seeks an all-out ban on abortion, but the bill has yet to find a place on the committee calendar.
