Nobody waves an American flag better than conservative Republican Senator Alan Hays from rural Umatilla.
To prove it, he’s proposing a bill that would require school boards to screen a patriotic documentary to eighth and eleventh-grade students.
Hays wants to require attendance for screenings of “America: Imagine the World Without Her.”
Under his bill, school boards would have to offer it to eighth grade and eleventh grade students. Hays says the documentary balances the curriculum.
“It looks at some of the misstatements that are being taught in our schools today and then it corrects those misstatements with accurate history.”
He emphasizes that the two-paragraph bill does not violate Republican principles of less government intrusion because it allows students to opt out of the screenings if they have a note from their parents.
That would at least spur a family discussion, Hays says.
“I’m telling the parents I’m putting the control of these students right around the kitchen table.”
Hays, a dentist, is also concerned about balance in science lessons. He calls evolution a theory and says it should be taught alongside non-sectarian creationism.
