Lawmakers To File Bill Allowing 64 Ounce Growlers

Wikimedia Commons

A pair of central Florida lawmakers are preparing a bill to repeal Florida’s rule banning the sale of 64 ounce beer growlers in Florida. But Regan McCarthy reports similar legislation has been “skunked” before by big beer distributors.

Current Florida law allows the sale of 32 ounce containers of beer and gallon-sized containers, but not the in between, industry standard – 64 ounce beer growlers. For several years Clearwater Republican Senator Jack Latvala has filed legislation aimed at changing that. He says the switch will help microbreweries – a growing class of small businesses springing up in Florida. But in years past, the legislation has received significant pushback from large beer distributors.  Palm Harbor Republican Representative Chris Sprowls is filing a companion bill in the House.
