Democrat Gwen Graham has ousted Republican incumbent Steve Southerland in one of the most contentious congressional races North Florida has seen in years. Graham won by about 2,000 votes.
Graham spent election night in Tallahassee with supporters and her family – including her father, former Florida Governor Bob Graham.
"I’ve been through a few nights like this in the past," Bob Graham said. "None of them has been as exciting or fulfilling as tonight and it’s so wonderful to be able to share it with you and to share with you the next member of Congress from the second congressional district, Gwen Graham."
Bob Graham introduced his daughter just before her victory speech Tuesday. Gwen Graham says she looks forward to taking North Florida to Washington DC.
“As soon as I have a chance. I’ve had so many phone calls since this race was called. I have not even had a chance to even begin to respond to the phone calls. But the two phone calls that I’m going to make are to Congressman Miller and Congressman Yoho and we need to have a good working relationship so we can do what’s right for the people here in North Florida," Graham says.
Graham says she’s also happy to be celebrating her victory as the first Congresswoman to win the district. She says she’s already spoken with Congressman Southerland and he’s pledged to help her make a smooth transition.
