The University of Florida in Gainesville has suspended its football quarterback amid a sexual assault investigation.
Freshman quarterback Treon Harris has been suspended from the football team while authorities investigate sexual assault allegations against him. Harris has not been charged with a crime.
According to the University of Florida, Harris is accused of sexually assaulting a female student early Sunday in an on-campus residence hall. The incident occurred following the Gators win against Tennessee in Knoxville.
The University Police Department is working with the Gainesville Police Department to investigate the incident. UF President Bernie Machen released a statement saying the school has no tolerance for sexual assault.
“We have no tolerance for sexual assault on our campus,” UF President Bernie Machen said. “The university is committed to providing a safe and inclusive environment for every member of the UF community. We must strive to protect all of our students from sexual harassment and assault, and do everything in our power to promote a safe learning environment.”
Harris is being represented by Attorney Huntley Johnson.
"I can tell you my office is representing him, and we are cooperating with the investigation," Johnson told WUFT-FM in Gainesville.
The incident occurred Sunday morning in an on-campus residence hall. A Monday press conference following the Gator's win this weekend over Tennessee was canceled.
The case at UF comes as Florida State University is undergoing a federal investigation for its delayed handling of sexual assault allegations against its quarterback Jameis Winston. Winston was never charged with a crime.
