Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi is asking a Florida appeals court not to act on two pending same-sex marriage cases for the time being. Bondi says Florida will respect whatever the U.S. Supreme Court eventually rules on the issue.
Bondi filed motions in two South Florida cases that are on appeal to the Third District Court. Judges in Miami and the Florida Keys ruled last month Florida’s constitutional ban on same-sex marriage violates the U.S. Constitution. In her motions, Bondi asks the appeals court to hold off on taking briefs in the cases because she expects the U.S. Supreme Court to rule on same-sex marriage once and for all. She writes it’s a matter of preserving taxpayer money and judicial resources.
Two other Florida judges have also ruled against the same-sex marriage ban in recent weeks. And two federal cases are pending in North Florida.
