The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is continuing to investigate how two inmates got shot at a north central Florida prison over the weekend.
On Saturday, Columbia Correctional officers initially reported two inmates had been stabbed. That’s according to a news release by the Columbia County Sheriff’s office. Later, when deputies arrived at the prison, they realized the inmates had been shot, not stabbed. And, Florida Department of Law Enforcement Spokeswoman Gretl Plessinger says that’s in line with her agency’s investigation of the matter so far.
“FDLE’s Tallahassee’s Regional Operation Center got a call for assistance regarding an incident at Columbia Correctional Institution. We can confirm that two inmates there were shot. The Investigation is active, and it’s a joint investigation between FDLE, the Department of Corrections, and the State Attorney’s office,” said Plessinger.
The facility was placed on lockdown at the time of the incident. But, no one can confirm if the facility—which houses about 1,400 inmates—still remains that way. No further details are known at this time, including possible suspects.
