Bay Scallop Season will start a little earlier this year. Normally, the season to allow for the harvesting of bay scallops opens on July 1st. But, this year, Governor Rick Scott asked the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to start the season Saturday, two days ahead of schedule, says FWC spokeswoman Karen Parker.
“According to his [Scott’s] news release, this is an opportunity for Florida families and our visitors to enjoy our state’s natural beauty, while catching the best scallops in the world. By moving the recreational date up, we’ll provide families and visitors with an extra weekend to enjoy the scallop season, which will benefit jobs and families along the coast,” said Parker.
Parker says there is a very limited bay scallop harvest zone along the state, running from the west bank of the Mexico Beach Canal in Bay County down to the Pasco-Hernando County line. The season will run through September 24th.
