Internet Cafe Ban Overwhelmingly Passes House

The Florida House has passed a ban on Internet cafes with overwhelming support on Friday. The issue became a priority after a federal probe into Internet cafes resulted in the recent resignation of Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll.

The Internet café ban passed with the support of 108 House members. Among them was Rep. Jimmy Patronis (R-Panama City). He thanked sponsor Carlos Trujillo for organizing the bill so quickly.

“You have set yourself on fire, you’ve articulated the arguments, you have made it clear that this is something that should no longer be a legal business in the state of Florida," Patronis said.

Seven members voted against the ban. Among them was Jim Waldman (D-Coconut Creek). He said, the Legislature was acting on emotion and should study the issue further before taking action. The House Gaming Committee had not been expected to produce any significant legislation this year.
