Several Florida groups are calling for a task force that will look at election reform in the state. They say it’s needed to improve Florida’s election process, so that the state can no longer be ridiculed for issues during this election as well as past elections.
The League of Women Voters of Florida is among those groups, asking for a change in Florida’s electoral system. The League’s President Deirdre Macnab says the system is broken, from long lines to the delay in getting election results. So, she says it’s time for Governor Rick Scott to prevent a repeat, and create an Election Reform Task Force.
“What happened was a blow to our confidence and our self-respect," said Macnab. "We must repair our reputation. We must restore out elections, and having a task force with trusted bi-partisan leadership is the essential first step to making this happen.”
In addition to the League of Women Voters, other groups calling for the task force include the NAACP, AARP, and Equality Florida.
If Scott creates the task force, the groups hope the task force offers recommendations before the start of the next legislative session. Former Governor Jeb Bush appointed a similar bi-partisan task force when election problems surfaced in 2000. Scott is currently working with elections officials on discussing improvements.
