Florida Prepares for Potential of Hurricane During RNC

With a few weeks left before the start of hurricane season, Florida Division of Emergency Management officials are preparing now just in case a hurricane makes landfall during the Republican National Convention in Tampa.

Florida Disvision of Emergency Management Director Bryan Koon said while the chance of a hurricane hitting Tampa during the time frame of the convention is relatively slim, it’s something the state needs to have a plan for.

“It’s also right in the height of hurricane season. You know it’s at the end of August in Tampa Bay. So we’re putting in place contingency plans so if we have some kind of tropical cyclonic activity, we understand how we’re going to deal with it,” Koon said.

And Koon said hurricanes aren’t the only emergencies to be prepared for during the convention. He said his team is working to ensure all convention goers can participate safely.
