Tallahassee, FL – Florida's prison chief has made it official; an all-out ban on pornographic materials in the state's prison system. As Florida Public Radio's Trimmel Gomes reports the crackdown comes soon after the state's new corrections secretary found a Playboy centerfold in a common area of a prison during a recent tour.
Corrections Secretary Edwin Buss was shocked to see the playboy centerfold pinned up, out in the open, visible to staff and visitors. Spokeswoman Gretl Plessinger says he simply wasn't used to it.
"Coming from Indiana, they have a similar ban, no pornography."
Buss wants to strengthen Florida's already existing policies by banning anything that depicts actual or simulated sexual intercourse in all corrections facilities. Possession will result in the maximum punishment.
"An inmate could be given a disciplinary report, they could lose privileges, go into confinement, they could lose game time."
The porn ban is already in effect while a system-wide smoking ban is set to start in September.
