Tallahassee, FL – The second in command in Governor Rick Scott's press office is stepping down. Lynn Hatter reports it's the third departure of a top-level staffer in Scott's administration in the last few weeks.
Brian Hughes is leaving the governor's press office to take over for Republican Party of Florida spokesman Trey Stapleton, who is moving to Washington D.C.
The announcement of Hughes' departure comes after the governor's Chief of Staff Mike Prendergast resigned to head the Department of Veterans affairs. Scott's top advisor Mary Ann Carter also stepped down.
Prendergast was replaced by Steve McNamara who was Senate President Mike Haridopolos' Chief of Staff.
There has been speculation that Scott's chief communications director Brian Burgess would be leaving, but according to the governor's press office, Burgess is staying put. No other resignations have been announced, though a spokesman did say the Scott administration is in a transition period.
The moves come after several polls show the governor with high disapproval ratings despite efforts like robo calls and sending letters to newspaper editors.
