Tallahassee, FL – Former Education Commissioner John Winn is heading back to Florida to head the department of education until a new commissioner is appointed. Lynn Hatter reports, Winn helped create the state's model of grading schools based on statewide tests.

Winn will be the interim head of the Department of Education. He previously held the position between September 2004 to early 2007 before leaving to take a job at the National Math and Science Initiative. State board of education member Mark Kaplan, says between a new FCAT coming online, and an earlier-than usual legislative start date for 2012, Florida needs an experienced person to lead the transition.

"And I think it's really critical that during this time we have experienced professionals at the helm who can pick up the ball from Eric and not miss a step."

Current Commissioner Eric Smith's last day on the job is Friday. He resigned in April. Also leaving is K-12 Chancellor Frances Haithcock. Former Osceola School Superintendent Mike Grego has been appointed in the interim.
