Tallahassee, FL – The firm hired to lead the state's search for a new education commissioner says it has 13 names and hopes more will follow. The deadline to apply for the job was Tuesday. Lynn Hatter has more.

The search firm Ray and Associates says more applications may come in after the deadline.. The firm was hired by the State Board of Education to lead a national search for a new education commissioner after Eric Smith announced his resignation from the post at the end of the school year.

Smith says he's stepping down to allow Governor Rick Scott a chance to put a new person into the position. The list of names includes several school superintendents from across the state and nation, a former Bush-administration Department of education official, and the CEO of an education consulting firm.
