Tallahassee, FL – Seventy-six organizations representing business and agriculture interests in and outside Florida joined forces to send a letter to members of Congress. They're asking for assurance that "the rest of the country does not suffer Florida's fate."
The Environmental Protection Agency says there are no plans to impose such restrictions in other states. A spokeswoman noted the Florida rules were drafted to settle a lawsuit. The suit, led by the public interest law firm Earthjustice, was filed to compel the federal government to set new limits on nutrient run off that can trigger harmful algae blooms.
Opponents argue compliance with the rules would be too costly.
