Tallahassee, FL – Republican legislative leaders are allowing Governor Rick Scott to miss his first legislative deadline. James Call reports, Scott asked for and got permission to delay release of his budget proposal until February 7th.
Lawmakers use the Governor's proposal as the starting point for creating a state spending plan. Although lawmakers were expecting Scott's recommendation on Friday, Feb 4, the inauguration of a new governor had moved the legal deadline to Sunday the 6th.
Senate President Mike Haridopolos and House Speaker Dean Cannon Tuesday agreed to grant Scott an additional day to work on his proposal. A Scott spokesman said the governor is trying to get state spending under control and the extra day will ensure that every dollar is spent with the right priorities in mind.
Governor Scott's first budget proposal is now due Monday Feb. 7th.
