Tallahassee, FL – While Rick Scott promised to remake Florida government, the newly elected governor did continue a Tallahassee tradition. As James Call reports, the Governor and First Lady hosted an open house at the Governor's Mansion before Tuesday's inaugural ball.
Before the mansion's doors opened, people were lined up three and four abreast for more than a block. Mark Schlakman waited about an hour to get to the mansion's front gate. Schlakman is with the Center for the Advancement of Human Rights and is quite familiar with the governor's residence. He once worked for Gov. Lawton Chiles. Still, he was drawn to the Inauguration Day tradition.
"Out of some sense of intrigue and respect, I'm standing in line at the Governor's Mansion and looking forward to meeting the new governor," Schlakman said. "Whether one comes from left or right, Democrat or Republican, Florida has one governor and I'm here to wish him well."
The open house lasted for more than two hours. After greeting the Governor and First Lady, people filed through the mansion into the backyard where they could choose between a drink of hot chocolate or apple cider.
